Swan Lake (2015)
Swan Lake is to ballet what Hamlet is to theatre – a must-see for every generation.
The ballet’s immense popularity is due to three things: The amazing tale of the impossible love between a swan and a prince, as if taken from a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale; the masterful choreography that offers an abundance of bravura dance; and not least, Tchaikovsky’s magnificent and iconic score that poignantly brings the entire emotional register into play.
Swan Lake may be nearly 150 years old, but it remains an enduring and universal tale of doomed love. The impassioned young prince, Siegfried, falls in love with the charming and enchanted white swan princess, Odette, yet is also lured by her black-feathered opposite, Odile. One embodies purity and poetry, the other seduction and depravity. Swan Lake is an epic love drama about the struggle between the forces of light and darkness, between good and evil, love and hate.
Silja Schandorff and Nikolaj Hübbe have created the immortal steps, Mikki Kunttu the futuristic sets, projections and lighting inspired by the darkest depths of science fiction, and Mia Stensgaard the sumptuous costumes.
